In 2024, Continental Capital Limited (CCL), a subsidiary of Continental Holdings Plc, partnered with Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) to provide three-year scholarships to deserving students pursuing Nursing and Midwifery studies. The initiative was designed to ease the financial burden of higher education while helping talented young Malawians realise their potential and contribute to the nation’s development.
Today, that investment is already bearing fruit.
One of the scholarship recipients, Martha Koroma, successfully graduated in April 2026 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and Midwifery and is now a qualified professional nurse-midwife.
For Martha, nursing and midwifery was more than a career choice. It was a calling driven by a passion for caring for people and improving the health and wellbeing of mothers, newborns, families, and communities. She was inspired by the opportunity to support women throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period while making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
Like many students, Martha’s academic journey was not without challenges. While balancing demanding coursework and clinical responsibilities, financial constraints remained her greatest obstacle. The scholarship from CCL provided much-needed relief, allowing her to focus on her studies and clinical training without the constant worry of how she and her family would meet educational costs.
Reflecting on the sponsorship, Martha describes it as much more than financial assistance.
“The sponsorship meant hope, encouragement and an investment in my future. Knowing that an organisation believed in my potential motivated me to work harder and make the most of the opportunity I had been given.”
Through her studies, Martha says that she developed not only the technical knowledge required of a healthcare professional but also valuable life skills including leadership, teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and resilience.
Her experiences in clinical settings strengthened her commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care. A particularly memorable experience was participating in a community mobilisation project in Mchinji, where she helped encourage expectant mothers to seek healthcare services early during pregnancy and childbirth.
Today, Martha’s aspirations are focused on improving maternal and newborn health outcomes, promoting safe motherhood, and contributing to the reduction of preventable maternal and newborn complications in Malawi. She hopes to continue growing professionally while serving communities through quality healthcare delivery.
Her success story reflects the broader purpose behind the partnership between CCL and KUHeS: creating opportunities that transform individual lives while generating long-term value for communities and the country.
